White House Correspondents Dinner: President Obama Mocks Mitt Romney, Donald Trump, Himself

With political, media and entertainment A-listers in attendance, President Obama wasted no time bringing the laughs at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The annual event last night gave Obama a chance to lighten the mood in a heated election year, though presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney still a target.

“It’s nice to be here in the nice, vast Hilton ballroom. Or as Mitt Romney would call it, a fixer-upper,” Obama said of his rival, who is often labeled elitist.

“We both have degrees from Harvard," he said, noting that the politicians do have some things in common. "I have one, he has two ... what a snob!”

Obama got plenty of mileage out of the "dog wars" between the respective camps, running an entire fake ad from the WOOF-PAC in "support" of Mitt.

Nor could the president resist poking fun at another one-time "rival."

Referencing his address at the 2011 dinner, where he bashed Donald Trump repeatedly just hours before Osama bin Laden was killed, Obama said that one year ago, he had “finally delivered justice to one of the world’s most notorious individuals.”

A photo of Trump was prominently displayed in the background.

The president also joked about Sarah Palin, Joe Biden’s verbal gaffes and Hillary Clinton texting him drunk, but saved plenty of verbal barbs for himself.

Obama referenced his low poll numbers, the fact that he ate a dog as a child in Indonesia, and allegations that he wasn’t born in the U.S. (again).

He then rattled off a list of some of the shortcomings of his first three years in office and the "secret agenda" for the second term he's trying to win and much more to conclude the nearly 16-minute speech the "nerd prom."

A term, as he put it, coined by D.C. insiders who never went to an actual prom.

France arrests 10 more Islamist suspects in raids

Gerard Julien / AFP - Getty Images

Members of the French National Police Intervention Group (GIPN) arrest a suspected member of a radical Islamist group in Marseille, Wednesday.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

PARIS -- Elite police arrested 10 suspected Islamists in early-morning raids across France on Wednesday in a clampdown ordered by President Nicolas Sarkozy after seven people were killed by an al-Qaida-inspired gunman last month.

The DCRI domestic intelligence service, supported by elite police commandos, carried out arrests in the southern cities of Marseille and Valence, two towns in the southwest and in the northeastern town of Roubaix, a police source said.

The raids follow the arrest of 19 people on March 30, a week after police snipers shot dead gunman Mohamed Merah, who killed three Jewish school children, a rabbi and three soldiers in a spate of attacks around Toulouse.

"Those arrested have a similar profile to Mohamed Merah," a local police source said. "They are isolated individuals, who are self-radicalized."

Story: Sarkozy: Toulouse shootings caused 9/11-like trauma; 19 Islamist suspects arrested

He said the suspects were tracked on Islamist forums expressing extreme views and said they were preparing to travel to areas including Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Sahel belt to wage jihad (holy war).

Some of those arrested had already been and returned to France, the source said.

Sarkozy re-election bid
Sarkozy, who is facing an uphill task to be re-elected president in an April-May vote, has vowed to root out any form of militancy following Merah's killing spree.

Thirteen of the 19 people arrested last Friday are alleged to have links to radical French Islamist group Forsane Alizza. They are being investigated on suspicion of terrorism, the Paris public prosecutor said on Tuesday.

Wednesday's raids were not linked to either those arrests or the Merah attacks, the source said.

The BBC reported that security has become a major issue in the election campaign, as Mr Sarkozy battles to overcome his main rival, Francois Hollande two-and-a-half weeks before the April 22 first-round vote.

Sarkozy, a former interior minister, has been accused by some opponents of capitalizing on the Islamist threat for electoral purposes even though only 20 percent of voters consider it their main concern, surveys show.

Speaking on RTL radio, Hollande, who is leading Sarkozy in polls, declined to be drawn on whether he thought the raids were politically driven.

"If there are suspicions and risks, then they must be acted upon," Hollande said. "But why do it after a terrorist act? I am not questioning what is being done, but we could have done more before," he said.

Best Restaurant and Dining Deals around the DPAC in Durham ...

by Ron Wen http://trianglenc-restaurants.com/

As a season subscriber to Durham Performing Arts Center?s (DPAC) Broadway series, I?ve gotten to know the area really well when it comes to restaurants. Between the DPAC and the Durham Bulls, this revived neighborhood can get really busy, which is actually a great thing! With all the people flowing through the area, new restaurants and bars have popped up to take care of those hungry folks. Great eating options ranging from Mexican nouveau, casual Italian sandwiches, gourmet burgers and seasonal urban chic. So if you?re headed out to catch a show or game, there?s plenty of great food options within a walking or short driving distance of DPAC!

With most shows starting at 7:30 to 8:00 pm and ending at after 10pm you can certainly do dinner after the show but I for one, would find it hard to enjoy things with a rumbling tummy. And while you?ve got some uber-convenient options right at the American Tobacco Campus (Tylers, Mellow Mushroom, Cuban Revolution), I prefer to grab a bite away from the main DPAC drag. Mellow Mushroom is a favorite of mine but from what I?ve seen it can be jam-packed in Durham. I can?t imagine what it?s like before a popular show like Wicked. Tylers has decent pub grub but it?s not a great option for a night at the theater in my opinion. You might be better off just doing beer and cocktails here. And Cuban Revolution?! Online reviews have been ALL OVER the place for this restaurant with regards to food and service so I?d prefer to avoid it for a big night out.
View Best Restaurant, Dining Deals Around DPAC! in a larger map

So what?s my strategy for the DPAC? While season ticket holders get free private parking, I prefer to just head on over to Main Street between 5 ? 6pm. You?re allowed one hour of parking until 6pm when it becomes free for the evening. So at 5pm there are typically free spaces (possibly with meters) that you can park in all night. If Main Street is full, try Chapel Hill Street or Parrish Street. It?s rare when I can?t find something within a couple of blocks near Main Street. As a bonus, you avoid traffic jams in a parking structure on the way home.

Once you?ve found a space, you?ve got some great restaurants within four blocks of Main Street and Mangum: Revolution, Piedmont, Dos Perros, Toast, Piedmont and Rue Cler! The easiest option is also probably the most expensive: Revolution. It?s a pretty little spot, very urban and chic with a seasonal menu and mere blocks away from DPAC. On theater nights, Revolution will get booked out so certainly make a reservation. Otherwise a seat at the fancy bar may be an alternative option. They serve the full menu and it?s a great place for small plates and classic cocktails. The dinner choices range from ahi poke to mussels, paparadelle to diver scallops. Revolution is definitely a place to impress your date and get the night started off with a bang!

Further down on Main Street is the wonderfully inexpensive but delicious Toast. Think panini?s, crostini?s, sandwiches and soup. The ingredients are all locally sourced and high-quality, I?m in love with their chicken salad sandwich. Add in a beer or glass of wine and you can still walk out of the place for $15. An amazing deal for food this fresh, it?s just not a fancy meal out. Be sure to check Toast?s website before making any plans to eat there. It?s a small operation run by a lovely couple but it may be closed from time to time for family reasons. Toast is typically open until 8pm which makes it a great choice for a pre-show dinner with some vino!

Further north you?ll find Dos Perros, a fairly new nuevo latino-Mexican restaurant. On one side you?ll find a cozy bar area and the other, a very simple bare-bones dining room. But make no mistake about Dos Perros, it?s all about more unusual Mexican dishes from a variety of regions of the country. I?ve tried out their chicken mole poblano and empanadas, good stuff! Sitting at the bar with a cocktail and some appetizers is a great way to get your evening started. The restaurant is still finding its way with the menu but I think Dos Perros is a fine option for Mexican and the ambiance is cool and casual.

Some other good choices in the Main Street area are the Piedmont Restaurant and Rue Cler but both will require a bit of a walk to DPAC. Piedmont is similar to Revolution, it?s focused on seasonal Italian-French food. Decor is rustic European and pleasant. Service can be a bit hit or miss and at their price points, I find that a bit disappointing.

Rue Cler is a solid French bistro with great service. They?ve also got a very affordable ($30) three course prix fixe menu, perfect for theater night. Mix and match from the seasonal menu or from the a la carte portion to your heart?s content. Recently I had a lovely lentil soup, braised asparagus and steak frites with bearnaise sauce as my prix fixe meal. Either restaurant is a fine option, just keep the stiletto?s at home for ease of walking!

Now if you?re willing to drive a bit before or after the show, you?ve got some fantastic options further down on Main and Ninth Street. Pop?s Italian restaurant has moved into its new space at 605 W. Main Street and serves up home-made pasta, wonderful brick oven pizza and their classic: chicken under a brick. Over on Ninth Street you?ll find the under-rated Blu Seafood which is comfortably casual but you can also dress it up here. All their dishes are handled with a deft touch, I?ve had their signature crab mac n cheese, a great calamari appetizer along with delicious desserts. It?s definitely worth the drive from DPAC for a civilized dinner at either spot! Just give yourself enough time to find parking and hoof it over to the show.

One newer option that puts you steps away from the DPAC entrance is the lovely, Tobacco Road Sports Cafe. Yes, they?ve got tons of televisions. Yes, they serve pitchers of beer. But Tobacco Road Sports barely qualifies as a sports bar given its upscale decor, lovely full bar and solid service. While it may be difficult to get a table on show night, the area around the bar is first come, first served, order at the bar. And if THAT area is full, you can even sit at the patio on the other side of the bar! There?s plenty of space here but being so close to DPAC makes Tobacco Road Sports a very popular dining spot.

Tobacco Road Sports specializes in eclectic pub food so you?re sure to find something tasty here. Start with their buffalo chicken egg rolls or lettuce wraps to get things going. Try out the nachos drizzled in cheese sauce and add some chicken or shrimp to bling it out, fantastic! Their burgers are solid or go for their triple slider plate: hamburger, barbeque and corndog! After you?re done, take a leisurely short stroll past the fountain over to DPAC, you can?t be any closer than Tobacco Road Sports?

And don?t forget about Bull City Burger & Brewery and Dame?s Chicken and Waffles which I reviewed separately. Bull City Burger & Brewery spins out fresh beer brewed on the premises along with top-notch gourmet burgers. Most everything is made in-house at Bull City Burger. And Dame?s brings two of your favorite foods together with a Southern twist, who can say no to fried chicken and/or waffles? A couple of newer spots for a simple and hearty meal, no jacket required?

In the end it all just depends on your mood: fancy and frilly or tasty and simple! Getting in for an early dinner around DPAC is typically not that hard unless there?s something very popular showing. But in all honesty, sometimes I?m just in the mood for some small plates and apps before hitting the show. It can be a bit easier than doing a full, three course meal if you?re pressed for time. Just don?t go to the DPAC hungry because outside of some cookies, gelato, candied nuts and adult beverages, you won?t find much to tide you over for three hours! And it?s really hard to enjoy a show when you?re famished, take advantage of the great dining options in the area, bon appetit!

Revolution (Modern Eclectic)
Toast (Italian sandwiches, paninis)
Dos Perros (Nouveau Mexican)
Piedmont (Seasonal Continental)
Rue Cler (French)
Pops (Italian)
Blu Seafood (Seafood)
Tobacco Road Sports (American)
Bull City Burger & Brewery (American)
Dame?s Chicken and Waffles (Southern Soul)

Argentina condemns Cameron's remarks on Falklands

(AP) ? Argentina's government on Tuesday condemned remarks by British Prime Minister David Cameron, who said that Britain played a role in "righting a profound wrong" in its 1982 war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

Cameron made the statement on Monday, the 30th anniversary of Argentina's invasion of the Falklands, amid heightened tensions over Argentina's long-standing claim to the islands.

"We are rightly proud of the role Britain played in righting a profound wrong," Cameron said in his written statement. "Britain remains staunchly committed to upholding the right of the Falkland Islanders, and of the Falkland Islanders alone, to determine their own future."

The islanders overwhelmingly say they want to remain British.

But Argentina's Foreign Ministry said Cameron's comments reflect "persistent glorification of colonialism."

"To use the words of the prime minister, 'a profound wrong' is precisely to persist with colonialism," Argentina's government said in a statement. "That's the history of the United Kingdom, and millions of human beings around the world can still bear testament to that today."

Britain, which has controlled the Falklands since 1833, sent forces to the islanders' defense when Argentine forces invaded on April 2, 1982. The 74-day occupation ended when British troops routed the Argentines.

In all, 255 British soldiers, 649 Argentines and three islanders were killed.

Argentina's claim to the islands, which are known in Latin America as "Las Malvinas," has widespread support across the region. Argentina also received moral backing last week from a group of Nobel Peace Prize winners who scolded Britain for ignoring U.N. resolutions urging talks.

On Tuesday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's government said in a statement that "today Argentina has a solid regional bloc that supports them in their sovereign cause."

Argentina has recently stepped up efforts to put both political and economic pressure on Britain due to the dispute.

President Cristina Fernandez's government said in its statement on Tuesday that it was wrong for Britain to expel Argentines from the islands in 1833.

The Fray Goes Emo for The National Anthem: Fun or Total Fail?

The University of Kentucky brought home its eighth national title last night, defeating the University of Kansas 67-59 and concluding one of the most impressive seasons in NCAA Men's Basketball history in winning fashion.

Prior to tip-off, though, viewers weren't discussing the length of Anthony Davis or the intensity of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

They were reacting to The Fray's rendition of the national anthem and wondering: what the heck was that?!? Or maybe that was just us.

Listen now to an arrangement that includes two guitars, a marching snare drum and a tambourine and then react to it now:

Former pro pitcher now keeps 'strike zone' in proteins

ScienceDaily (Apr. 3, 2012) ? Perhaps no other biochemist in the world has his own baseball card, but University of Massachusetts Amherst doctoral student Elih M. Vel?zquez-Delgado, who gave up a pitching career for science, does. Now the only stats he cares about are experimental data, because, he says, "I fell in love with the fact that I can see a molecule. I can actually see an enzyme and watch how it functions. That captured me."

A native of Puerto Rico who pitched for five seasons in the minors, the Arizona and California Leagues, for the Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants' organizations, Vel?zquez-Delgado says his fast ball was hot enough but he lacked the "killer instinct" required to make it in the majors. He reflects, "I may have the ability but not the mindset."

While pursuing an undergraduate degree in chemistry from the Universidad del Turabo in Puerto Rico, Vel?zquez-Delgado came to UMass Amherst in 2006 as an under-represented minority student summer intern with the help of the Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate. He says, "I fell in love with what we do here. So I came back after I graduated to pursue a PhD degree."

Now he is working on his doctorate in the chemistry laboratory of Professor Jeanne Hardy and is about to publish his first academic paper with her. They report discoveries about an enzyme that's causally involved in Alzheimer's and Huntington's diseases in the current issue of the journal, Structure.

Though now a biochemistry researcher, Vel?zquez-Delgado still measures success in baseball terms. "The difference between being a good hitter and a bad one comes down to only 3 hits in 10 at-bats," he explains. "If you bat .300 or miss about 7 of 10 opportunities, you'll get somewhere. But if you bat .200 or miss 8 of 10 at bats, you're not going far."

"In research I feel it's the same. If you can get the same 30 percent success rate you'll be awesome. So not being depressed about the seven misses is a skill. If you work hours and hours, devoting your life to it, you'll shave that edge down until you succeed."

Hardy, his advisor, says Vel?zquez-Delgado has solved "a very difficult problem" in a remarkably short time. The goal was to use her lab's expertise in X-ray crystallography to find a way to allosterically inhibit, that is block the action of, the disease-related enzyme caspase-6. In practical terms, she points out, "if you can understand how nature inactivates caspase-6, you can perhaps make a drug that uses the same mechanism and find a treatment for the disease."

Caspase-6 is one of a family of enzymes that "chew up" or cut other proteins and are sometimes depicted as miniature Pac-man characters, all mouth, the chemists explain. One technique that has been used to inhibit their disease-causing cuts in biologically important proteins is to target the "mouth" location, figuratively shoving something in to stop it from chewing.

But the biochemists also know that nature uses another technique, exploiting a different site on the enzyme and inhibiting it there through a natural process called phosphorylation. Vel?zquez-Delgado proposed to use X-ray crystallography to see, with molecular precision, how nature inactivates caspase-6 and perhaps imitate that approach.

"Phosphorylation adds two electrical charges, so most people have assumed that they're critical to the inhibitory action," Hardy explains. "But in fact, in this whole class of enzymes nobody had ever studied how this kind of inhibition works. We suspected it was allosteric, that is not based on the "mouth" or active site, but on the position of an "ear" on the protein, but we had no idea of the molecular mechanism."

Caspases' active sites are composed of four mobile loops that can take a variety of positions. When the protein is phosphorylated at a position outside the active site, one of the four active site loops is forced in the wrong conformation for substrate binding, which means it can't cut substrate and lead to the disease state. Through a series of experiments that Hardy calls "clean and beautiful," Vel?zquez-Delgado discovered how to induce this non-binding state and reverse it again. His structural detective work suggested that by cutting off just one amino acid, the caspase would again be inhibited even in the phosphorylated state. He did the experiment, and it turned out to be correct.

"He found that of more than 5,000 atoms in the protein, if we delete three of those atoms, we reverse the effect and inhibition by phosphorylation doesn't happen. Those three atoms control this function. It's a completely new way to inhibit caspase-6, and it opens the door to developing a drug that works by the same mechanism," Hardy says.

Warning Signs of Teen Drug Abuse at School

Teen drug abuse is one of the major health concerns in the United States of America. But this particular habit among the school going kids can be controlled by identifying the drug abusing symptoms at the right time and taking necessary preventive measures. Since teens spend most of the time in their schools, it is the mere responsibility of the teachers and the school authorities to look after their well-being. Further, establishing a drug free learning environment will help them to stay healthy and safe.

Following are the few warning signs of teen drug abuse at school, followed by the effective methods to control them.

Irregular attendance: There could be two reasons for being irregular to the school. One, ill health caused due to drug use and the second could be drug dependence. When a person starts using drugs, he feels high and hyper active which makes him use the drugs quite often leading to drug dependence.

This makes him stay away from school in order to get and use those drugs. However, frequent absenteeism doesn't always mean that the person is using drugs.

Unexplained sudden drop in grades: The academic performance of a drug abusing teen will be marked by poor grades. This could be due to the lack of interest and concentration towards their studies as a result of drug abuse ? drug abuse directly affects the functioning of the teen's brain. Also, teens tend to waste their time by socializing more often due to their desperate need for drugs.

Loss of interest in extracurricular activities: Drug abusing teens never show interest in extracurricular activities. They try to stay isolated from the crowd or from their regular peer group and try to spend time all alone or with other drug users. Even if a teen has a lot of interest in sports and games, he tries to avoid them after using drugs.

Disciplinary issues: Certain behavioral changes can be seen in the teen drug abusers. They ignore their personal care and grooming habits. They report arrogant behavior and aggressive reactions at schools even for simple things. They lose patience quiet easily.

Reports of intoxication at school: At times, their excessive drug use results in intoxication at schools or some of their classmates may report about their drug use at schools. This could be the best identity to find their drug abusing habit.

Not returning home after school: Irregular in-time/out-time from/to the house may not necessarily mean that a child is abusing drugs, but the drug abusing kids often tend to spend more time outside or in a secluded place.

Hiding school reports at home: As a result of sudden drop in their grades, these teens try to hide their school reports from their parents and try to deceive them by telling fake stories. If the parents are particular about the report cards and the school attendance, they can easily find out their poor performance and hence can search for the valid reasons.

In order to create a positive, safe and healthy learning environment, the school authorities should take preventive measures to eradicate this dreadful habit among the future citizens. They need to create awareness among the teens by educating them about the negative impacts of drug abuse. Further, conducting random drug tests help in controlling the drug abusing habits in teens.

School authorities need to take the responsibility of providing necessary counseling to the drug abusing students and also encourage them to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Myanmar's Suu Kyi hopes victory is dawn of new era

(AP Photo/Altaf Qadri)

(AP) ? Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi's victory in parliamentary elections is the biggest prize of her political career. But the weekend vote for only a few dozen legislative seats may have sown the seeds of something far more significant ? the possibility her party could sweep the next balloting in 2015 and take control of Myanmar's government.

That, for now, remains only a tantalizing dream for her supporters, and making it happen in three years' time may be unrealistic in a nation still heavily influenced by a feared military whose powers and influence remain enshrined in the constitution.

Still, hope for installing a truly free government hasn't run this high in decades.

"We hope this will be the beginning of a new era," a beaming 66-year-old Suu Kyi said in a brief victory speech Monday, one day after the by-election in which her National League for Democracy party won almost all of the 44 seats it contested.

The win was "not so much our triumph, as a triumph of the people," she told a euphoric, thousands-strong crowd gathered outside her tumbledown party headquarters in Yangon, where joyous supporters thrust hands in the air and monks cradled magazine-size posters bearing her image.

The last time her party won a landslide victory, during a general election in 1990, the then-ruling army junta annulled the results and stayed in power 21 more years.

Times have changed dramatically since then in Myanmar, previously called Burma. The junta is no more, and the country's new leaders ? many of whom are former generals ? have proven with Sunday's poll that they are capable of taking concrete steps toward democratic rule, even if they had little to lose by doing so this time around.

But much remains the same: The military and the retired generals who hold the nation's top posts still wield near-absolute power, and Suu Kyi and her party will occupy only a small minority in the 664-seat legislature ? not enough to change a constitution engineered to keep the status quo by allotting 25 percent of parliament's seats to the army.

Reducing the military's participation in government "is one of the most important changes" that need to be made, said Su Su Lwin, an opposition candidate who also won a seat in Sunday's poll.

And perhaps one of the most difficult. "There's a lot of work ahead," she said.

The weekend election results, though, indicate that the popularity of the party Suu Kyi founded in 1988 remains strong ? strong enough, perhaps, to secure the legislative majority it would need during the next national poll to choose the president.

It is unclear, however, whether Suu Kyi would run. She has not declared any intention to do so, but on Friday she said the by-election's outcome would "very much influence what happens in 2015."

A provision in Myanmar's constitution, though, bars people from the nation's top post if they or any of their relatives are foreign citizens. Suu Kyi married a British national, Michael Aris, who died in 1999, and their two children were born abroad and do not live in Myanmar.

There are also concerns over Suu Kyi's health. She suspended her last week of campaigning because of fatigue, and she would be 69 when the next vote is held.

Suu Kyi last week dismissed speculation she would accept a Cabinet post if offered one, saying, "I have no intention of leaving the parliament which I am trying so hard to get into."

There is speculation that the government is only using Suu Kyi to impress Western nations and get years of economic sanctions lifted. Still, her entry into the legislature is hugely symbolic, as is her party's overwhelming win.

"This election is an important step in Burma's democratic transformation, and we hope it is an indication that the government of Burma intends to continue along the path of greater openness, transparency, and reform," the White House said in a statement Monday.

Among the seats taken by the opposition Sunday were four in the capital, Naypyitaw, a ruling party stronghold which was built by the former junta. It was an embarrassing sign of defeat for the government.

"The people have made a statement," Su Su Lwin said. "They're saying ? not only to the country, but to the rest of the world ? that our people are ready for change."

Toe Toe Tin, a dentist who came to watch Suu Kyi speak, said the election was important because it was a referendum on the miserable state of life in the country. "It showed that people don't want this government or this army," she said.

There is little wonder why. Until last year, the military had kept an iron grip on power since 1962. Soldiers were accused by rights groups of dragging civilians to the front line in multiple wars with rebels in the north and east, of raping women and subjecting men even in their 70s to forced labor.

Even in the calmer parts of Myanmar, the former junta deployed state agents to conduct random checks of homes after midnight to make sure all the people were where they should be. That practice was quietly stopped last year when President Thein Sein came to power, but most people still report their movements to authorities because no one has officially announced that the practice has ended.

"There have been changes, yes," Toe Toe Tin said. "But we expect this could all disappear overnight. There are no guarantees."

Suu Kyi appears to be taking no chances, and her party clearly considered Sunday's ballot as a rehearsal for the next vote in three years' time.

On Monday, she said the opposition was reporting a list of irregularities observed on voting day to the election commission "not in any spirit of vengeance or anger, but ... with the intention of making sure that things improve in the future."

Continue On Your Business Strategy Plan To Ensure Success

Article by Troy G. Nunez

Truly serious businesses typically prepare a business plan in advance of seeking growth capital. The catch is that a great many business owners neglect to continue with the original business growth plan through the lifetime of the business.

Grab that old strategic business plan and use it now

Getting funds is actually a pivotal purpose of any business strategy, however a well structured plan can provide the business founder a great many other positive aspects. It can help him / her truthfully judge her own objectives and provide a framework for tactical decision making and performance supervising while in implementation.

What is the recommended structure for a strategic business plan?

I would recommend a rolling 3 year plan using twelve-monthly refreshes. Plan groundwork requires both strategic and business planning procedures and it?s vital that the actual owner is thoroughly included in both operations. The strategic planning procedure ensures that the organization is competing in a market place in which it can be viable. It includes exploration of things both external and internal to the venture.

The internal analysis examines the prerequisites of the company owner, his / her knowledge and values, and the resources she has at their disposal. The external study takes into account potential consumer needs and plausible threats from competitors or any other external events. This specific strategic plan defines the business objective, the owner?s ideals, along with the marketplace and niche the organization will compete in. It also looks at who will be its clients, which of their requirements will be satisfied and, very broadly, what it needs to put into practice to fulfill them. This may also suggest how the founder should modify their presumptions and/or develop innovative skills prior to start-up.

A strategic platform for your company is paramount for financial success!

The strategic plan is then evolved into a business plan, which describes in detail how the business will capture the competitive edge accessible to it inside the established market. It needs to include approaches for marketing, operations, human resource supervision and financial procedures.

The marketing strategy will illustrate how the small business will keep its ongoing clients and also attract new clients.

The operations strategy will show you the work of the company ? what it it will do to provide the products or services required by its consumers ? and the assets it will make use of to achieve this.

The human resource strategy will suggest how your company will attract, grow, motivate and retain people, along with the manager.

The financial strategy will anticipate earnings from sales and specify how the price of working the business will be financed e.g. by lending options or profits.

Your company plan needs to include indicators for monitoring performance at regular monthly or quarterly periods. These shouldn?t get confined to signals to all round successes of the company ? by the time yearly indicators present weak performance, your company is undoubtedly in considerable trouble. Therefore, the advantages of early warning indicators is crucial ? enabling remedial steps to be utilized before the organization goes downhill.

The next phase of your company becoming successful is to commence with an expert top quality logo design. You won?t need to spend a fortune with this. In fact you can purchase a cheap logo design that looks like any good sized company brand from any good customized logo contest website.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers working as part of the International Cystic Fibrosis Consortium have discovered several regions of the genome that may predispose cystic fibrosis (CF) patients to develop an intestinal blockage while still in the uterus.

A report of this international study appears online April 1, 2012 in the journal Nature Genetics. It was the work of the North America CF Gene Modifier Consortium, which brought together dozens of investigators from the United States, Canada, and from France, to identify genetic variations that could be linked with meconium ileus (MI), an intestinal obstruction that usually requires emergency surgery for treatment, and can result in a substantially increased rate of serious health problems.

MI affects roughly 15-20 percent of all patients with CF, a genetic condition that causes scarring throughout the body, especially the lungs and pancreas. Though every CF patient carries mutations in both copies of the same gene coding for a protein called cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator, or CFTR symptoms can vary widely from patient to patient.

The genome-wide association study (GWAS) of more than 3,700 CF patients identified non-CFTR genetic variants in the cell membrane that separates the interior of cells from the outside environment. More specifically, the variants involved genes responsible for ion transport in the lower end of the small intestine.

"These variants involve cells in the small intestine that predispose CF patients to develop MI while still in the womb," said one of the senior study authors Michael Knowles, MD, professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at UNC and a member of UNC's Cystic Fibrosis-Pulmonary Research and Treatment Center.

"The discovery provides new understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms underlying MI. In addition, it offers the possibility of developing therapies to intervene in utero," Knowles said. "Further, it provides molecular insight into the role of genetic variation in ion transporters in CF, which may be applicable to more commonly, and severely, involved organs such as the lungs."

Other UNC study coauthors are Wanda K. O'Neal, Rhonda G. Pace, Jaclyn R. Stonebraker, Sally D. Wood, and Fred A. Wright. In the U.S., the study was funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the U.S. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Announces Recipients for Energy Audits, and Renewable Energy Development Assistance

WASHINGTON, March 30, 2012 - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA has selected for funding 10 projects nationwide to help rural small businesses and agricultural producers reduce energy consumption and implement renewable energy technologies. The funding will be made available through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), which was authorized by the 2008 Farm Bill.

"For the first time in 13 years, imported oil accounts for less than 50% of the oil consumed in America. That is because we are producing more domestically, using more alternative fuels, and using less energy through energy efficiency efforts," said Vilsack. "Through the REAP program, USDA has partnered with more than 13,000 of America's farmers, ranchers and rural businesses to save energy and improve their bottom line by installing renewable energy systems and energy efficiency solutions. USDA will continue to help make America more energy efficient, and in doing so, more competitive by encouraging rural small businesses to continue to build renewable energy systems"

In Cumberland County, Maine the Greater Portland Council of Governments has been selected for an $80,000 grant to develop on- and off-shore wind projects. In Somerset County, the Maine Community College System (Kennebec Valley Community College) has been selected to receive a $100,000 grant to provide four energy audits and renewable energy development assistance for 140 agricultural producers and rural small businesses across the state.

In Weld, Larimer and Boulder Counties, CO., the Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association has been selected for a $50,000 grant to conduct energy audits for farmers, ranchers, and rural small businesses in making energy-efficiency improvements to their operations. It is estimated that 140 rural businesses and 60 agricultural producers will be assisted through this project.

REAP loan guarantees and grants can be used for renewable energy systems and energy efficiency improvements; and grants for feasibility studies, renewable energy development assistance and energy audits.
